Armor Piercing Bombs (AP)

  • 2,000 lb.. AP

Introduced primarily to attack shipping or for heavily reinforced targets. The 2,000 lb.. AP bomb saw service against the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau while docked in Brest during 1942. The type was also used in 1944 to attack underground oil plants and storage facilities in France, but results were generally disappointing and faulty fusing resulted in many of the bombs failing to detonate.
